Grandpappy’s Gal
“Son, see them white sticks out there,” said Grandpappy. “That long skinny one reminds me of a girl I used to date when I was about your age.”
“How can a stick remind of a girl, Grandpa?”
“Her skin was pale as the moon and her body held no curves—straight as a string.”
“What became of her?”
“She ran off to California with a sailor. I heard they both made it big in Hollywood.”
“Really? What was her name?”
“I can’t remember exactly. Her last name sounded like some type of lubricant, but her first name was . . . Olive.”
You caught me out there, wasn't expecting that ending. :) Nice one.

You got a BIG belly laugh out of me. I think this is my favorite of yours. Love it!!! Great job. Really great.
ReplyDeleteI'm still thinking. In the meantime, I wrote a few haiku inspired by our beach vacation at http://banterwithbeth.blogspot.com
That is just TOO cute. I'm still laughing. Thx for the chuckle on this cold morning.

LOL all she needed to do was eat more spinach. As my dad said, "It'll put hair on your chest!" :D Great story, Russell.

Oh, that was awesome. Mind you, always had a weakness for humour writers. Loved it!
ReplyDeleteHa! Snicker! Loved it. Always enjoy when humor is included in some of these stories. Nicely done. :-)

Awesome, for anyone who remembers Popeye, it was very clever. Here's mine: http://remakingme-atiyatownes.blogspot.com/2012/03/outland-friday-flash-fiction.html
ReplyDeleteI love the way you could take such a serious-looking picture and create such a humorous tale, Russell. But, I shouldn't have been surprised, either. :)
ReplyDeleteLoved your story, Russell. I wasn't thinking of Olive Oyle, I was thinking of a supermodel not a movie star, hahaha.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good story though am lost on the real personalty of Olive. Well done.

Ha, too cute, loved the voices, and the last line. Olive Oyle, indeed. Grandpappy - pappy, popeye? Cute, and subtle enough that those of us who grew up with it know, but it's a sweet tale nonetheless.

Hi Russell,
ReplyDeleteIt seems we both chose to do grandpa stories. Your story reminds me of the stories my dad and uncles used to tell. They were whoppers just like this one. Don't know if you made this one up or borrowed it from the past, but it sounds genuine.
Here's mine if you haven't read it. If you have, thanks!

This was new. My Dad & Uncles were great stories tellers too. That must be where you and I inherited the desire to tell tales (especially tall ones).
